By KUNA
Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu on Thursday condemned the military coup that took place in Mali yesterday.
In a press statement, Prof. Ihsanoglu said the OIC’s principled stand toward such situations is that it “reminds of necessity of maintaining constitutional legitimacy that results from ballot boxes and resolving problems through dialogue.”
He called the coup leaders to commit themselves to democratic system and pledge to enable the Malian people exercise their free political will as soon as possible.
“The situation in the country requires launching an urgent dialogue to resolve the problems the country is facing with full respect for human rights, ” he underscored.
The statement followed reports that rebel soldiers in the country overthrew President Amadou Toumani Toure, and promised to hand over authority to a new elected government.
