By

In the complex global politics, the unchanging friendship of the People’s Liberation Army of China and the Pakistan Army is a symbol of the long-lasting partnership and shared goals. It started during the Cold War in the 1960s and has since developed into a comprehensive structure in military, economic, and political fields. The political support that Pakistan extended to China in the early years of the People’s Republic of China helped pave the way for comprehensive military cooperation; this is evidenced by joint exercises and training, as well as the provision of sophisticated defense equipment by the PLA. Economically the cooperation is supported by China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), especially the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which is aimed at changing the face of infrastructure in Pakistan. Tactically, the PLA-Pakistan Army cooperation is vital for maintaining stability in South Asia and countering threats in the region and for promoting multipolar security systems worldwide.

The PLA-Pakistan Army friendship can be dated back to the 1960s, a time that was characterized by the Cold War and the shift of alliances. It was in the 1960s that the basis of a strategic partnership between Pakistan and China was established, as Pakistan helped China in gaining membership of the United Nations and international recognition. This early cooperation paved way for further cooperation in the military and economic aspect in the future.

Military relations between the PLA and the Pakistan Army are comprehensive and involve exercising, training, and defense equipment sharing. These are aimed at improving the level of cooperation and increasing the potential of both forces in different areas. The PLA has been an important source of arms transfers to Pakistan for modernization of its military equipment and hardware, such as aircraft, tanks and missiles.

The PLA and Pakistan Army have conducted various exercises including “Warrior-VII” and “Shaheen” to show their readiness for operations and cooperation. The latter not only enhances combat efficiency but also strengthens the military cooperation between the countries and increases the mutual understanding of the strategic threats and measures to counter them.

Economically, the PLA-Pakistan Army friendship has been supported by the BRI, especially the CPEC. Being one of the most significant projects under the BRI, CPEC is designed to improve connectivity and foster economic growth in Pakistan with the help of infrastructure projects in transport, energy, and telecommunications.

The PLA is very important in the security of CPEC projects and the protection of these projects from any threat in the region. This economic cooperation not only enhances the bilateral economic relations but also places Pakistan in the strategic framework of China’s regional economic integration connecting Eurasian markets and improving trade corridors.

Tactically, the PLA-Pakistan Army cooperation has major consequences for the security architecture in South Asia. They work in partnership to combat threats such as terrorism, extremism, and the security of borders among others. It helps in achieving stability in an area that is considered to be volatile due to the security challenges and geopolitical tensions.

The recent celebration of the 97th anniversary of the PLA’s founding at Pakistan’s General Headquarters highlighted the strength and significance of this bilateral relationship. Ambassador Jiang Zaidong of the People’s Republic of China attended as the Chief Guest, underscoring the mutual respect and trust between the two nations. General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Pakistan, welcomed the Chinese delegation, praising the PLA’s contributions to China’s defense and national development.

“Pakistan-China relations are exceptional and have always weathered the vicissitudes of the strategic environment with mutual trust and unwavering belief in each other’s support,” emphasized General Munir during the ceremony.

Ambassador Jiang expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s hospitality and reaffirmed China’s commitment to collaborate closely in countering terrorism and maintaining regional stability. “No force can destroy the iron-clad friendship between China and Pakistan and the brotherhood between the two militaries,” he declared, highlighting the resilience of their strategic partnership in the face of global challenges.

This celebration not only commemorates the PLA’s legacy but also underscores the dynamic nature of PLA-Pakistan Army relations, which continue to evolve amidst changing geopolitical landscapes. As both nations navigate global complexities, their alliance remains pivotal in shaping regional security frameworks and fostering sustainable development on a global scale.

It also helps to maintain a balance of power with other regional players and thus is a factor in the formation of a multipolar world. The PLA-Pakistan Army friendship upholds the principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and mutual respect, thus providing a counter-discourse to the Western-centric security discourses of the ‘security dilemma’ and ‘security complexes,’ and instead, envisioning an ‘inclusive security. ’

In the international system, the PLA-Pakistan Army cooperation is indicative of China’s increasing assertiveness in world politics. In this way, both countries declare themselves as interested in the global security and economic management by means of engagements and cooperation. These cooperation initiatives are not limited to the bilateral agendas but focus on the construction of global political discourses, stressing the role of partnership in preserving the stability and advancing the sustainable development of the world.

In the twilight of this article, the PLA-Pakistan Army friendship is a strategic partnership based on historical, political, and military relations. Covering military, economic, and strategic aspects, this cooperation has demonstrated its stability in the context of changing circumstances and threats in the world and the region. The PLA and Pakistan Army promote trust with each other and improve their efficiency to maintain stability in the region while demonstrating their power in the international arena. Thus, the relations between the two countries remain dynamic and change along with the modern geopolitical environment. The PLA-Pakistan Army friendship not only enhances the bilateral relations but also defines the regional and global security structures, which brings out the importance of strategic partnerships in determining the future of the world.
