Powers Present New Proposals To Iran

By

During discussions on the Iranian nuclear issue in Baghdad, the six powers (USA, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany) have introduced Iran with “new proposals”, the press quoted Wednesday Catherine Ashton, the European diplomacy chief. “The proposals we have prepared are address our major concerns about Iran’s nuclear program (…). Uranium enrichment to 20% is clearly a significant concern for the international community, “said Michael Mann, spokesman for Ashton who led the delegation to the negotiations of the Six in Baghdad. Mr. Mann did not reveal the details of these proposals, but stressed that the issue of enrichment level of 20% was among them. It is reported that the six powers on put on the table a package of measures to build trust. In this context, Iran should stop enriching uranium to 20%, transfer abroad its stock of 140 kg of enriched uranium to that percentage, and give pledges of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Several Western countries, led by the United States, suspect Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons under cover of a civilian program. The Islamic Republic says its nuclear program is purely civilian and that it does not seek to acquire nuclear weapons. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated Wednesday that the nuclear program was peaceful. “The production and use of weapons of mass destruction are contrary to religion [Islam] and have no place in the defense doctrine of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said, according to the official IRNA news agency.
