Sri Lanka: Sirisena Pardons 608 Prisoners

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena has granted a presidential pardon for 608 inmates from Prisons Island in view of the Vesak Poya Day.

These inmates were serving sentences for minor offenses, the President’s office said.

In addition, Sirisena commuted the death sentences for 70 other inmates to life sentences under the Presidential pardon.

Vesak Poya Day is celebrated on the first day of the full moon in the month of May in honor of lord Buddha.
