IMSN To Provide Anti-Piracy Training For Maersk Line

Maersk Line, Limited recently signed a contract with IMSN that provides for maritime security training. IMSN will be training MLL crewmembers, while underway, in both Vessel Persons with Specific Security Duties (STCW required, 2010 – Manila Amendments Code A/VI-6) as well as the Anti-Piracy Defense Course, a proprietary CBT course developed by IMSN. Both IMSN courses are DNV-certified.

“IMSN first approached MLL regarding their plans to develop an anti-piracy training course back in fall of 2009,” stated MLL Company Security Office, Rolf Pedersen. “We then attended a pilot training course in spring of 2010 at Maine Maritime Academy and, over the following months, assisted IMSN with feedback from an industry perspective.”

The Justice Knowledge Network at Holland College (Canada) played a large role in the final development of the CBT course that IMSN makes available online today. “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to see all of the hard work and coordinated efforts from two colleges and a major commercial shipping line, finally come together to begin making a difference in the lives of mariners,” said Tim Nease, IMSN’s CEO.

Rolf Pederson added that, “shipboard training is better than class room training for this application because it will be tailored to the ship, and the crew can be trained as a team rather than as individuals ashore with theoretical knowledge that has to be made practical by their own devices.”

IMSN recognizes the complexities of a large shipping company and the logistical challenges that come into play when trying to coordinate training.  IMSN offers training while underway, so no time is lost to the shipper and costs are kept low. The combination of the two security courses offer shipping lines the ability to prepare for piracy contingencies and satisfy certain STCW training at the same time.
