Tunisian President: Assad Is “Finished”

By

Tunisian President Marzouki believes that the regime in Damascus is “finished”. He made these comments in an interview published Tuesday, April 24. Bashar al-Assad will eventually go “dead or alive,” the Tunisian head of state told “Al-Hayat” daily.

“I think this man (Assad) is ready to make concessions” and “the Russians, Chinese and Iranians must face the fact that he is finished,” said Marzouki. The Tunisian President advised Moscow, Beijing and Tehran, which support the Syrian leader to “convince him to leave office.”

“You will go one way or another. You will leave dead or alive, and it’s better for you and your family to go live,” Marzouki told Bashar al-Assad.

“If you decide to go dead, it means that you have killed tens of thousands of innocent people. Enough with the bloodshed,” the Tunisian leader stated.

The Tunisian President also believes that the plan of the international envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, “will fail” because the 300 observers from the UN are “woefully inadequate” to ensure compliance with the cease-fire, which has beenconstantly violated since it came into force on 12 April. Annan’s plan provides, in addition to the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of troops from cities, the release of detainees and allowing humanitarian access and free press in the country.
