UN Chief Calls Iran To Help Solve Syria Crisis, Nuclear Debate

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon met Sunday evening with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, urging him to prove to the international community the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, said a statement by the UN’s press service. “The Secretary-General has called on Iran to take steps to convince the international community of the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program,” the statement said.

According to the press service of the UN, the Secretary General also discussed the situation in Syria where Iran can influence on the regime, which confronts the armed opposition for some 18 months.

“The Secretary-General stressed that the tense situation in Syria worsened the humanitarian situation in the region,” reads the statement.

The UN chief also urged the Iranian leader not to use the “language of incitement” during is upcoming speeh at the UN Assembly.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will speak Wednesday and expected to slam the Western countries and Israel.

Paris, London and Berlin officially requested new European Union sanctions against Tehran.

The West and Israel suspect Iran of planning to acquire nuclear weapons.
