US Says Closely Monitoring Syria’s Chemical Weapons Stockpile
By KUNA
The United States said it was monitoring Syria’s stockpile of chemical weapons as violence continues to escalate there, the State department confirmed Friday.
Asked by reporters about reports of up to 55 storage facilities, State department spokesman Mark Toner confirmed the US was monitoring Syria’s stockpile and “we do believe it still remains under government control, but we’re continuing to look at it closely.”
Officials have said that the US in particular is talking with its allies on ways to ensure that Syria’s stockpile of portable anti-aircraft missiles, called Man-Portable Air Defense Systems, or MANPADS, are not stolen or diverted.
