(RFE/RL) — The leader of Hizballah says members of the Lebanese Shi’ite militant group have confessed to being spies for the U.S. CIA, the Central Intelligence Agency.
In a televised speech, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said his Iranian-backed group now believes that CIA agents working out of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut had recruited at least two Hizballah members as spies, and the group is investigating whether a third member had been recruited by the CIA or another intelligence service.
Nasrallah accused U.S. ally Israel of being behind the spy network, saying that after
Israel failed in attempts to infiltrate Hizballah, it asked the U.S. to infiltrate the group.
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut has denied the Hizballah leader’s claims, saying there appear to be “internal problems within Hizballah.”
