Egypt: Mursi’s Office Denies Interview With Iran’s Fars News Agency

By

Mohammad Mursi’s office denies having had an interview with Iran’s Fars News Agency prior to his official announcement as Egypt’s new president.

On Sunday, Mohammad Mursi, the candidate endorsed by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, was finally announced as the winner of the presidential elections and became the first elected Egyptian candidate after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.

On Monday, the Fars news agency reported that its correspondent in Cairo interviewed Mursi hours before the official announcement of the election results and published the interview in an audio file on its website.

A spokesman for the Egyptian presidency told the official news agency MENA: “Mr. Mursi did not give any interview to Fars, and everything that this agency has published is without foundation.”

Fars had quoted Mursi as saying that he was interested in better relations with Tehran, adding: “This will create a balance of pressure in the region, and this is part of my program.”

Mursi was also reported as saying that Egypt will reconsider the Camp David Accord.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and Egypt had been severed for more than 30 years, but since the fall of Hosni Mubarak last year, both countries have shown interest in re-establishing relations.

The Islamic Republic has been highly supportive of the revolution in Egypt, and its Foreign Ministry has extended congratulations to Mohammad Mursi for his victory in the elections.
