Egypt: 76 Sentenced In Attacks On Israeli, Saudi Embassies

By

A man has been sentenced to five years in prison and another 75 people received one-year suspended sentences in Egypt for attacks on the Israeli and Saudi embassies in the capital Cairo last year, the Al Jazeera news network quoted a court official as saying.

Omar Afifi, sentenced to jail on Sunday, was tried in absentia as he had fled abroad, the official said.

Protesters stormed the Israeli embassy in Cairo in September 2011 in a move that followed an incident a month earlier, when five Egyptian security guards were killed by Israeli soldiers pursuing militants who had earlier killed eight Israelis.

The nearby Saudi embassy was also attacked with stones.

The public prosecutor said the defendants had been charged with “attacks on diplomatic missions.”
