Iran Calls On IAEA To “Justify” Demands

By

The head of Iran’s Atomic Agency says Iran’s nuclear activities are completely transparent and Iran has no problems with IAEA inspections; however, the agency “needs to justify its demands for inspections of particular locations.”

IRNA reports that Fereydoon Abbasi, the head of Iran’s Atomic Agency, said on Sunday that Iran has no intention of ending negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency, adding that: “These negotiations are done on the basis of legal provisions and in the framework of the agency’s responsibilities, and we will continue with them.”

The last round of talks between Iran and the IAEA ended on Friday in Vienna.

The IAEA delegation maintained that the main component of its demands was the inspection of Parchin Military Base near Tehran.

Herman Nackaerts, the deputy head of the IAEA, said at the end of the meeting that major differences were not resolved. Iran is reportedly resisting the IAEA inspection of Parchin, saying the military base is unrelated to Iran’s nuclear activities.

Iran has continuously denied any military ambitions in its nuclear program, but the IAEA says it has received intelligence regarding Parchin that could indicate it has been used for nuclear tests.
