Siberian Shamans Place Curse On Russian Politician

By

Some 50 representatives of indigenous peoples from Russia’s North have put a curse on Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov and A Just Russia, a pro-Kremlin quasi-opposition group that he heads, over the use of “dirty electoral technology.”

The rite was performed on Moscow’s central Pushkin Square Friday and was led by Shaman Vinilkhu from the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District and Yevdokia Gayer, general secretary of the League of the Indigenous Small Numbered Peoples of the North.

Their main grievance was the use of “double” candidates by A Just Russia in the Khanty-Mansi District and other regions.

Two people with the same names are nominated to run for a local legislature, much to the confusion of the electorate, who vote for one person and then it turns out that another person gets elected who works on behalf of totally “alien” interests.

Gayer complained that A Just Russia has failed to look after the interests of the indigenous peoples of the North it is supposed to represent in the Russian parliament.
