Belgium: Police Release Brussels Attack Suspect Due To ‘Lack Of Evidence’

By

According to the Independent, the man arrested and charged with “terrorist murders” has been released from Belgian police custody due to a lack of evidence.

Fayçal Cheffou, a journalist, was apprehended and charged on March 26th, making him the third suspect in the Brussels attack. He was believed to be the “man in the hat” featured on CCTV footage with suicide bombing suspects Najim Laachraoui and Brahim el-Bakraoui in the departures terminal on Tuesday morning before the attack.

Prosecutors attempted to link him to the scene of the crime using DNA analysis; however, results showed that the claims were not “substantiated”.

Earlier today Belgian authorities charged three more people in relation to the bomb attacks that rocked the capital Brussels last week.

Dual blasts hit Brussels’ Zaventem airport on March 22nd near the American Airlines check-in counter, shattering windows and prompting authorities to evacuate the airport. Another explosion rocked Maalbek train station.

Officials said on Monday that death toll from the bombings has climbed to 35.
