Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi said Wednesday that the measures imposed by the “siege countries” on the State of Qatar would undermine the efforts of the Group of 77 and China to strengthen the unity of the group and the cooperation between its countries.

This came in a statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Al Muraikhi at the ministerial meeting held by the group in New York on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations

Qatar is currently experiencing sanctions led by Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which accuse it of having ties to extremism – claims that Qatar denies.

Al Muraikhi pointed out that Qatar has been under siege for more than three months, in a violation of the principles of cooperation on which the Group of 77 has been based, as well as the violation of the Charter of the United Nations and the right of peoples to self-determination and sovereignty, the principles of friendly relations between States, human rights and humanitarian principles.

Al Muraikhi also referred to the unjust campaign of the fabricated accusations against Qatar aimed at tarnishing its reputation, damaging its relations with friendly countries and imposing guardianship on its foreign policy.

Al Muraikhi said that while Qatar faces arbitrary measures against the unity of its people and their cohesion with the leadership of the State and because of its distinguished position on the international scene, the support of the majority of the international community for its position and its extensive regional-international partnerships aimed at confronting the collective challenges, these measures undermine the efforts of the Group of 77 and China to strengthen the unity of the Group and the cooperation among its countries.

Al Muraikhi reiterated that the State of Qatar attaches great importance to promoting South-South cooperation, especially in the current international economic environment, as means of enhancing the participation of our States in the world economy.

Al Muraikhi expressed Qatar’s belief in the importance of international development cooperation and participatory responsibility for achieving sustainable development, stressing the importance of continuing to play a prominent and increasingly important role inspired by the Qatar National Vision 2030, and provide a support through cooperation programs in the field of economic and social development, humanitarian affairs and the fight against poverty.

In this context, Al Muraikhi announced that Qatar is hosting a high-level meeting to prepare for the Economic and Social Council Forum concerned with following up the Financing for Development in 2018 from November 18-19.

Qatar’s hosting of this meeting reflects its partnership with the international community in this area, as Doha hosted in 2008 the International Follow-up Conference on Financing for Development to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus.”

Al Muraikhi also pointed out to the increasing tension, division and instability in many parts of the world, which directly affected development and weakened the ability of countries to advance development plans and prosperity of their peoples.

In the light of the challenges faced by the Member States of the Group, Al Muraikhi said that this required them to cooperate and refrain from any actions that might harm Member States or affect solidarity among them.

Al Muraikhi also called for more joint efforts towards economic and social development, peace and prosperity with a spirit of partnership and solidarity in order to overcome obstacles and challenges and create an enabling environment for the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.

Al Muraikhi reiterated the confirmation of Qatar on the principle of the permanent sovereignty of peoples living under foreign occupation over their natural resources, in particular the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and the population of the occupied Syrian Golan, calling on Israel to desist from the exploitation of those resources.

At the conclusion of the statement, Al Muraikhi stressed Qatar’s commitment to the goals and priorities of the Group of 77 and China and its keenness to be an active partner for achieving sustainable development for the benefit of all mankind.
