Shooting Kills 2 US Firefighters, Wounds 2 More

By

Two volunteer firefighters were fatally shot Monday in the latest example of American gun violence since a primary school shooting spree shocked the nation earlier this month.

Two more firefighters were wounded as they rushed to put out a house fire near the shore of Lake Ontario, about 540 kilometers Northwest of New York City. Hospital officials say the surviving firefighters have serious injuries. News reports say the gunman also died.

For a while, gunfire blocked efforts to put out the fire, which spread to several other homes. Police evacuated other homes in the area and are still investigating the incident.

The violence comes 10 days after the school shooting incident in Connecticut, which killed six adults and 20 children aged 6 and 7. That incident has sparked an intense national debate over laws to regulate guns and an examination of the U.S. approach to mental health issues.
