Iran Ready For Nuclear Compromise, Says Foreign Minister

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, proposed a compromise regarding Tehran’s controversial nuclear program: to get uranium that will be enriched uranium in third countries. In an interview with the German weekly Der Spiegel to be published Monday, the Iranian foreign minister reaffirmed his country’s right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

“If our right to enrich (uranium) is recognized, we are willing to compromise. We would limit, on a voluntary basis, the level of our enrichment of nuclear fuel,” he said.

But he told Spiegel , in return, Iran should “be guaranteed to receive” the necessary fuel from abroad. Such a solution was proposed in vain to the Western countries during previous negotiations.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said last week that Iran would not give up its nuclear program despite Western sanctions that led to the significant decline of its currency value. The Rial has lost 40% in a week against the major currencies.

His comments come as the Foreign Ministers of the European Union are expected to meet in Luxembourg on October 15. France, Germany and the United Kingdom should seek new sanctions against Iran in the field of energy and finance.
