Egypt: Military Council Scraps Controversial Article In Election Law

By

The Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces decided Saturday to scrap the fifth article of the new election law which barred members of the political parties from standing legislative elections as independents.

The new law allocates two thirds of the seats of the People’s Assembly (parliament) for party lists while the remaining third is set aside for independents.

The military council also approved amendments to Act 73 regulating the exercise of political rights, according to a decree adopted by President of the Council Field Marshal Mohammad Hussein Tantawi.
