Iranian Opposition Leader Reportedly Under House Arrest

By

(RFE/RL) — The website of Iranian opposition leader Mehdi Karrubi says he has been placed under house arrest because of his call for a rally in support of anti-government demonstrations in Egypt.

Karrubi’s sahamnews.org website says security officers were stationed at the entrance to his house in Tehran today, preventing relatives from meeting him.

Karrubi and another opposition leader, Mir Hossein Musavi, have asked for permission to hold a rally on February 14 in support of the recent uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia.

The authorities refused permission, calling the proposed rally a political move.
