Armenia’s Pashinyan Comments On Possible CSTO Expulsion

By

If member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) decide to expel Armenia from the bloc, the country will simply acknowledge that decision, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.

“I know that there is a mechanism for expulsion from the CSTO and that it functions. If the member states decide to remove Armenia, we will have to take that decision into account. There is nothing else we can do,” Pashinyan said, according to Sputnik Armenia.

His comments came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the CSTO would consider applying provisions of the organization’s charter concerning members that fail to fulfill their obligations, noting that Armenia has not paid its membership contributions.

Yerevan has frozen its participation in the CSTO since February 2024. Prime Minister Pashinyan has not ruled out the possibility that Armenia could leave the organization if the CSTO does not answer Armenia’s question regarding the boundaries of the alliance’s area of responsibility in relation to the country. Armenia has not paid membership fees for two years.
