The statement said the ongoing investigation was into the orders to open fire on demonstrators as well as any abuse of the president’s authority for personal gain.

Mubarak was hospitalized on Tuesday with heart problems.

Reports said Mubarak is accused of helping his friend, businessman Hussein Salem to seize state lands in Sharm El-Sheikh and Aswan as well as facilitating and assigning him the export of gas from Egypt to Israel in lower prices.

These deals damaged the Egyptian economy by US$80 billion.

Sources said that Mubarak was surprised Tuesday by the existence of evidence and information received from the United States and European countries about huge properties and assets owned by the various members of his family.
