Russia Warns Against Foreign Interference In Syria As Violence Continues
The Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Lavrov warned Tuesday against any attempt from “outside forces” to torpedo the efforts of the UN Security Council regarding the Syrian crisis. “Some states and forces outside the country do not want the success of the current efforts by the UN Security Council,” he said in Moscow after meeting with his Abkhaz counterpart.
“I hope all those will act in the interests of the Syrian people, and not according to their political ambitions,” Lavrov said at a news conference.
However, the Russian minister declined to specify the names of these countries.
He said these forces “are trying to replace the Security Council by non-official training of the” Friends of Syria “(…) and encourage the Syrian opposition not to cooperate with the government to establish a dialogue or a truce.”
Meanwhile, government troops bombed several towns Tuesday in Syria despite the arrival of UN observers responsible for assessing compliance with the cease-fire.
On Tuesday, at least five civilians were killed in Syria, despite a declared cease-fire since Thursday, reported the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR).
Three civilians were fatally hit by government forces in the region of Idleb (northwest). And in the province of Deraa (south), two civilians were killed and dozens wounded in the bombing of the town of Basra al-Harir.
In the city of Homs, the neighborhoods of al-Bayada and Khaldiye were also bombed since Tuesday morning, the NGO said.
The cease-fire seems increasingly fragile, raising doubts among Western countries over the implementation of the peace plan by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
