The picturesque region of Kashmir, nestled between the towering Himalayas, has been a subject of contention between two nuclear-armed rivals, India and Pakistan, for over seven decades.
The ongoing conflict over this territory has not only caused immense suffering for the local population but has also posed a significant threat to regional stability and global peace. The Kashmir issue, with its historical roots and complex dynamics, demands urgent resolution for a multitude of compelling reasons.
The roots of the Kashmir conflict trace back to the partition of British India in 1947, which resulted in the creation of India and Pakistan. The princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, with its mixed religious demographics, became the center of a territorial dispute. Three wars have been fought between India and Pakistan over this region, exacerbating tensions and leading to the militarization of the area.
