Lebanon: Two Dead In Beirut In Clashes Between Assad Supporters And Opponents

By

Two people were killed and 18 injured during clashes in Beirut between Lebanese sympathizers of the Syrian revolt and members of a party supporting the regime of Bashar al-Assad, media reports said. The clashes broke out in the night following the death of a Sunni cleric killed by the army in northern Lebanon, causing increased tension in the country already weakened by sectarian clashes that left 12 dead in recent days.

The clashes took place in the neighborhood of Tarik al Jadede (southern Beirut).

The Lebanese opposition blames the Syrian regime of wanting to plunge Lebanon into chaos to divert attention from its own crisis.
