Syria: Blast In Damascus, Rallies Across The Country
A bomb killed at least 11 killed in Damascus Friday, when tens of thousands of Syrians were demonstrating against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad despite the repression. Syria’s state television said that a “suicide bombing”, which left 11 dead and 28 wounded, took place in front of a mosque at the time of the Friday prayers.
At the same time, the Syrian opposition groups reported tens of thousands of demonstrators against the regime across the country, despite the firing by government forces to disperse them, which killed three people, including a child, in the Damascus area, in Aleppo and Deir Ezzor.
Like every Friday, the pro-democracy activists had called on people to mobilize themselves, by challenging UN observers from who arrived in Syria on 15 April to monitor the cease-fire officially in force for two weeks but constantly violated. “Observers, stop playing with the blood of our people,” proclaimed a sign in Beit Saham, a suburb of Damascus.
Activists and NGOs reported in the last days about dead and wounded in several cities after a visit by UN observers.
According to a spokesman for the UN, Neeraj Singh, two team members are now based in Deraa (south), birthplace of the revolt, after the two remained in Homs and the other two located in Hama in central the country.
In New York, diplomats announced that General Robert Mood is on his way to Damascus, where he will take the lead in the observer mission of the UN. This 54 year old Norwegian officer had negotiated the first deployment of 30 observers, and will manage the arrival of another 100 members of the mission within a month.
