Turkey President Urges International Action On Syria
By RFE RL
(RFE/RL) — Turkish President Abdullah Gul has warned that the “worst-case scenarios” are taking place in Syria and urged the international community to act.
Gul told reporters in Ankara on October 8 that Turkey would continue to do everything necessary to protect its borders.
His comments came as Turkey’s military reportedly launched a retaliatory strike after a mortar bomb was fired from Syria into the Turkish countryside earlier in the day.
It was the sixth consecutive day of Turkish retaliation against bombardment from the Syrian side of the border, where President Bashar al-Assad’s forces are fighting an insurrection that began alongside Arab Spring-style protests in early 2011.
The exchanges are the most serious crossborder violence in Syria’s revolt against Assad.
Turkey’s armed forces have bolstered their presence along the 900-kilometer border with Syria in recent days.
