Israeli Foreign Minister Avidgor Lieberman said Tuesday Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has no desire to achieve peace and added that the Syrian leader’s “sole objective is to remain in power.”

Lieberman, cited by the Israeli radio, said he was ready to start negotiations with Syria but “relinquishing the (Syrian) Golan Heights to Syria is not a peaceful option to achieve peace.”

Israel has been occupying the Golan Heights since the 1967 Middle East war.

Lieberman made the remarks during a meeting with foreign officials, during which they discussed unrest in some Arab countries.

“The Syrians only want to talk about peace but they are not searching for it in a right manner,” he said.

Lieberman warned against the uncertainties in the region and said Israel was “afraid that extremists will be i power.”
