Spain: Unemployment Falls By 190,767 Year-On-Year In January

The number of recorded unemployed at Spain’s State Public Employment Services fell by 190,767 in the last 12 months at a year-on-year rate of 5.49%.

The total number of recorded unemployed in January rose by 83,464 on the previous month. In relative terms, the unemployment rate rose by 2.61%.

Accordingly, the total number of unemployed now stands at 3,285,761. In January 2018, unemployment rose by 63,747 on the previous month.

In seasonally-adjusted terms, unemployment rose by 3,292 people.

Unemployment among men stands at 1,360,448, a rise of 23,204 (1.74%), while unemployment among women stands at 1,925,313, a rise of 60,260 (3.23%) when compared with December. When compared with January 2018, unemployment among men has fallen by 115,031 (down 7.8%) and among women by 75,736 (down 3.78%).

Unemployment among young people under the age of 25 fell by 4.01% year-on-year. It rose by 10,252 people (4.15%) in January on the previous month, and by 73,212 (2.48%) among those over the age of 25.

Recorded unemployment rose in all 17 autonomous regions, particularly in Andalusia (19,996), Madrid (11,308) and the Region of Valencia (9,369).

By sector of economic activity, recorded unemployment fell in Construction by 6,896 (down 2.48%), and among first-time job-seekers by 1,346 (down 0.5%). In contrast, recorded unemployment rose in Agriculture by 4,920 (up 3.55%), in Industry by 1,202 (up 0.42%) and in Services by 85,584 (up 3.84%).

Total number of contracts

A total of 1,858,077 contracts were signed in January, an increase of 108,166 (6.18%) on January 2018. Of these, 181,348 were permanent employment contracts and 1,676,729 were temporary contracts.

In terms of permanent employment contracts, January saw an increase of 13,711 (up 10.46%) on the same month of the previous year. 181,348 permanent employment contracts were signed in January, a rise of 8,395 (4.85%) on the same month of 2018.

Of the permanent contracts signed in January, 115,706 were full time and 65,642 were part time.

323,194 contracts were signed in January with workers under the age of 25, of which 23,445 (7.25%) were permanent employments contracts, an increase of 7.16% on January 2018.

Benefits

The coverage rate of the unemployment protection system in the month of December stood at 60.4%, 1.83 percentage points up on the same month of 2017.

There were 1,835,488 unemployment benefit recipients in December, 3.1% fewer than in the same month of the previous year.

The amount paid out in benefits totalled 1.52 billion euros, 2.1% more than in the same month of the previous year.
