US Won’t Tolerate Iran Closing Strait Of Hormuz – Panetta

By

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has warned of a quick, decisive and very tough American response to any Iranian attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz.

He made his warning in Washington Sunday a few hours after a spokesman for the Guards of the Islamic Revolution said the supreme Iranian leadership had ruled to close the Strait in the event of an oil embargo imposed on Iran by the European Union.

The expected embargo is likely to receive the final go-ahead on January 30th at a ministerial meeting of the EU.

Iran determined to block Hormuz traffic

Iran has renewed its threat to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to a possible oil embargo imposed on it by the European Union.

Teheran’s Khorasan daily quotes a spokesman for the Guards of the Islamic Revolution as saying Iran’s supreme leadership has already made appropriate decisions about this.

The expected embargo is likely to receive the final go-ahead on January 30th at a ministerial meeting of the EU.

At present, one fifth of Iran’s oil export goes to EU buyers.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital bottleneck for some 40 percent of the world’s oil tanker traffic.
