Yemen: President Saleh Accepts GCC Proposal, Opposition Rejects It
While the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed Monday to the initiative proposed by the Gulf states, the Yemeni opposition coalition rejected it because the proposal contained no mentioning of Saleh’s trial.
The opposition representatives announced that the initiative does not meet the protesters’ demands to oust the regime.
A statement issued by the presidential office today welcomed the mediation efforts, which include the transferring of his powers to his deputy and forming a new government led by the opposition.
The statement added that the president welcomed the efforts of the GCC countries to resolve the current crisis in Yemen, pointing out that he has no reservations about the peaceful transfer of power in line with the Constitution.
On the other hand, an opposition spokesman said that those who wish to protect a regime that killed peaceful protesters are foolish.
