EU-Funded Projects Reunited For Advocating For Stringent Food Waste Reduction Targets

Collaborative research and innovation projects align with EC’s Call for Action, urging policy consistency and comprehensive measures to address food waste crisis across EU member states

In a crucial move towards global food security and environmental responsibility, the European Commission has embarked on a mission to comprehensively assess and mitigate the impact of Food Loss and Waste (FLW) in the European Union. With approximately 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions linked to unconsumed food (UNEP, 2021), the need for decisive action is evident.

The EC aims to unravel the true scale of the issue and determine effective measures for reduction, encompassing retail, food service, and household levels, and holding the potential for benefits for both people and the planet.

Agro2Circular supports the declaration and promotes the shared vision with other similarly oriented projects: ClieNFarms, ENOUGH, PestNu, Sisters and ZEROW.

In response to this urgent matter, the project signatories call upon policymakers to adopt ambitious and comprehensive actions. The key recommendations foreseen include the establishment of 50% reduction targets across the entire food value chain, incorporating primary production.

By implementing these measures, the European Union can demonstrate strong dedication to global sustainability objectives and fulfill commitments outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy.
