Sri Lanka: Sirisena Says He Took Steps To Provide Rajapaksa’s Security Detail

“Even though one year and three months completed since the assumption of duties as the President of this country, I have never deployed even a single Army Soldier for my security,” according to Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena, who added that, however, he had taken steps to provide Army security for the former President, Mahinda Rajapaksa in addition to providing him with the best bulletproof vehicles available.

President Sirisena further said that even though some criticize him, he had taken steps to reduce the security of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, he is the only President in the world who allowed the defeated State Leader to travel to his home town in a state-owned helicopter with his own security personnel and he further said that previously such incident never recorded in any other country in the world.

He made these remarks participating in the SLFP Badulla district convention in Bibile town on April 09.

Addressing the gathering he further said that Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa decided to hold the presidential election two years prior to the end of his term, not only because of astrological advice, but he knew about the UNHRC report on Sri Lanka, which was due to release on March, 2015 and because of the financial crisis, which the present government has to face now.

The present financial crisis is not only a unique problem faced by us it is a common problem that every country in the world faced. Even if Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa was in power, the situation could not have been avoided.

Even though some people raised their voices on the election platform that if Maithripala Sirisena became the President, the political leaders who gave leadership to the war would be taken to the electric chair and the war heroes would be taken to the international tribunal, but after he became President Sirisena says he was able to eliminate the words of electric chair and international tribunal from the hearts of the citizens of this country and instead of electric chairs Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa and the former army commander, Sarath Fonseka were seated in the Parliament.

A new party forming within the SLFP cannot achieve the victory and he recalled that even though Mrs Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga formed a new party she became the President of this country only when she contested under the SLFP.

“The people of this country elected me on January 08, 2015 due to our program presented to the country. The democracy and freedom has been established in the country so that everybody can live without any fear or suspicion,” the President said.

He said that the government, during last year, succeeded in winning back the dignity of the country, earlier rejected by the international community. “For the first time of the history of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan leader has been invited by the seven powers of the world to the summit of the seven world powers to be held next month in Japan,” he said.

“To build up the SLFP again we have to find out the reasons for the defeat of it. The SLFP was rejected by the people as a result of the rape cases, murders and robberies carried out by some members of the party. When I presented proposals for disciplinary investigations against them as the General Secretary of the party, the then leaders did not pay any attention to it,” the President explained.

He emphasized that he would execute his duty to take SLFP forward as a pure and immaculate party with the philosophy of Bandaranaikes. “There should be a good party to build a good government,” he said.

“Though there are separate agendas for political parties, the number one should be the country and the people. Everybody should get together with one objective to build the country, without fighting with hatred and anger,” the President further stated.
