Bahrain: Renewed Clashes As King Calls For Reconciliation

By

Bahraini forces have clashed with anti-regime protesters in Bilad al Qadim village near the capital Manama on the eve of the first anniversary of the Bahraini uprising. Some protesters hurled firebombs and rocks after the security forces fired tear gas.

On Monday, thousands of opposition supporters marched through Manama’s streets in the largest attempt in months to retake Pearl Square, the central roundabout that served as the epicenter of weeks of protests last year by Bahrain’s Shi’ite majority.

According to the AP, riot police and other security forces have deployed around the square and other parts of the kingdom to prevent the opposition from staging mass rallies.

Meanwhile, Bahrain’s King Hamad called late Monday for cohesion and reconciliation between all sections of Bahraini community. “There is no doubt that everyone is looking to achieve this objective and we are pleased to see the sincere and honest calls from those who are keen on the unification and cohesion of Bahraini society,” he said.
