India not a scam-driven country, says PM

Amid a serious of scams unearthed, and aggressively highlighted by the media, in the past few months, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Wednesday asserted that India was not a scam-driven country, and that his was not a lame duck government.

He also assured the country that his government was “dead serious” in bringing to book all the wrong doers “regardless of the position they may occupy”.

Scams that have tainted India’s image worldwide in the recent times, incude ‘2G Spectrum’, ‘Commonwealth Games scam’, and ‘Adarsh Society scam’.

Millions of dollars have allegedly been siphoned off by people sitting at higher positions in the Congree-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government headed by Dr Manmohan Singh.

Interacting with the Editors from Electronic media today in New Delhi, the PM said: “In projecting these events an impression has gone round that we are a scam-driven country and that nothing good is happening in our country. We have a functioning government, and we take our job very seriously. We are here to govern and to govern effectively, tackle the problems as they arise and get this country moving forward on a pace of development which would do justice to the demands being made on the process of governance.”

He added: “I wish to tell you that our economy is in good shape. We will have a growth rate of 8.5 percent this fiscal year, and that the way India has come out and tackled the aftermath of international financial crisis, I think does our country a great credit.”
