Turkey: Brawl In Parliament – OpEd
The incidents of fighting, physical altercations, injuries, and violence against women that occurred yesterday in the Turkish Grand National Assembly will forever be remembered as a dark stain on the history of our democracy. We might have expected to witness such scenes in far-off places, perhaps in other countries, but the thought of them happening within our own parliamentary walls was beyond imagination. Yet today, what transpired in our assembly—the very symbol of our democracy and the will of the people—has deeply shaken and embarrassed us all.
The attacker could not have carried out such an action against the speaking member of parliament without party approval, orders, or directives. It is clear that he was made a member of parliament specifically for such actions. After approaching from behind and throwing the first punch, he retreated to the back of the chamber. The fight was then continued in an organized manner by those who followed him. Given the sheer number of incidents involving violence, crime, beatings, and assaults, it is inevitable that the day will come when accountability will be demanded and justice will be served. When violence is not punished by justice, it always finds an alternative response.
This incident, which undermines the fundamental principles of democracy—freedom of expression and a culture of dialogue—casts a shadow not only on today but also on the future. The scenes of violence and conflict, so unbecoming of our representatives, have severely damaged the dignity of our parliament. It was a day when not just those present in the assembly, but the entire nation and our democracy, were wounded.
We must not forget the responsibility of those who caused this. We will not forgive such actions that tarnish democracy and the honor of our parliament. It should be remembered that every action that casts a shadow over the will of the people is an attack on our democracy. If we are to build a stronger and more respected democracy for future generations, we must never allow such incidents to occur again. We must take the necessary measures to ensure that such shameful events never happen under the roof of our assembly again and uphold the integrity of our democracy.
