Iran Agreement Reached? IAEA Chief To Visit In Tehran
Yukiya Amano, Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit Sunday in Tehran for talks on the Iranian nuclear program, said it was confirmed on Friday. The last visit by an IAEA chief in Tehran took place in October 2009, when the predecessor of Amano, Egyptian Mohamed ElBaradei, held talks in Tehran.
Amano will be joined by Herman Nackaerts, responsible for inspections, and the Deputy Director General of IAEA, Rafael Grossi. According to diplomatic sources, Tehran is about to reach an agreement with the UN agency on the principles to be implemented as part of the supervision on its nuclear program. Western countries suspect the Iranians have been seeking to develop atomic weapons under cover of a civilian program.
According to an official IAEA statement, Mr. Amano “will travel to Tehran on Sunday (…) to discuss topics of mutual interest with senior Iranian officials.” The negotiations will take place Monday, said the statement.
