Merkel Wants Sanctions For Countries Failing To Address Debt Problems

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Saturday for imposition of sanctions against countries in debts, and complained that the EU was still unauthorized to punish these nations.

Merkel, addressing a coference of her conservative Christian Democratic Party in Braunschweig said if any country violated the European Union (EU) economic stability pact for long years then the EU’s Court of Justice could be sought to “make this country to live up to its obligations.”

Merkel said the EU countries should strengthen their alliance within the Union in order to back the euro as a strong currency.

She said the countries with debts’ problems should relinquish some of its authorities to survive.
