Philippines: Bishops Laud Duterte’s Simplicity

By

Several Catholic bishops praised incoming President Rodrigo Duterte for his simplicity after the president-elect announced that his inauguration on June 30 will be without pomp.

“I am happy about the simple inauguration,” said Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of Cubao. “We need to be simple even in our way of life,” said the prelate.

Bishop Pedro Arigo of Puerto Princesa said Duterte is setting a good example as a leader for the poor.

It is appropriate for public officials to avoid costly and extravagant activities to show respect and solidarity with the poor, he said.

Bishop Antonio Maralit of Boac also lauded Duterte, saying a simple inauguration is a “good start” and a strong message for genuine change.

He appealed to Catholics to pray for the president-elect that he will fulfill his duties to the country and bring relevant change to the lives of people.
