Syria Eid Al-Adha Truce Fails

By

The truce established in Syria by the international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi was “stillborn,” said Saturday rebel commander in Aleppo, calling the plan of the envoy a “failure.” “What a truce? This truce is a lie. How can a criminal regime observe a truce? It is a failure of Brahimi, this initiative is stillborn,” said Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Oqaidi, head of the rebel military council Aleppo.

At least 146 people were killed during the violence perpetrated in Syria on the first day of the truce declared on the occasion of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha, it was reported Saturday by the London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR).

According to the organization, 53 civilians, 50 soldiers and 43 armed rebels were killed Friday in various incidents.

Command of the Syrian armed forces declared a truce throughout the country on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, which runs from October 26 to 29. Syrian authorities have also called on the opposition to do the same. However, some terrorist groups in Syria have rejected this proposal. Damascus for its part announced that it would respect the truce, while reserving the right to respond to attacks by rebels.
