At least 56 people were killed in an attack by Boko Haram militants against a village in Borno State, in north-east Nigeria, the local governor Kashim Shettima confirmed.

Based on a reconstruction by the local official, the attack was carried out between Friday and Saturday in Baanu, in the Nganzai district. The attack was only reported after the arrest over the weekend in Lagos, economic capital of southern Nigeria, of 12 suspected Boko Haram militants.

According to the state security department, the presence of militants of the Islamist group confirms the determination of Boko Haram to expand its radius of action also outside its north-eastern strongholds.
