Yemen: GCC States Officially Ask President Saleh To Resign
The Arab Gulf state declared Sunday that Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh should hand over power to his vice president and allow the opposition to lead a transitional government.
Saleh’s representatives and the opposition will meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss Yemen’s “unity, security and stability,” foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries said on Sunday in a statement after talks in the Saudi capital.
According to Reuters, the meeting would be based on principles which included “the president announces the transfer of his powers to the vice president,” they said.
Meanwhile, a Yemeni human rights group revealed Sunday that the death toll of the protests demanding the ouster of Saleh reached 180.
A total of 3,282 Yemenis were wounded in the past two months.
According to the National Forum for Human Rights, the protests have been taking place in 15 governorates of Yemen.
