The role of energy in twenty-first-century geopolitics has grown to one of the most important aspects. Energy is now seen not only as a resource that can be used within a country for economic development but also as a force for connectivity, technological innovation, diplomatic influence and regional national security. Perhaps nowhere has this change been more pronounced than in Asia, where a combination of fast economic expansion, increasing energy consumption and growing geopolitical competition is remodelling the strategic landscape of the region. China is at the centre of this change. China has been able to follow this ambitious and multidimensional energy policy to ensure its own energy security and to restructure Asian connectivity. Today, China’s energy policy is multidimensional, ranging from infrastructure planning, the transition to renewables, digital technologies and regional cooperation to a broader geopolitical strategy unrelated to energy security.

China’s phenomenal economic development has led to a huge growth in its energy consumption. Ensuring stable and uninterrupted energy supplies has become a critical national priority, as it is the second-largest economy in the world and one of the biggest consumers of oil, natural gas and electricity. The Chinese are increasingly appreciating the significance of energy security in the context of economic security, environmental sustainability and national resilience. Thus, Beijing’s energy policy has evolved from just “energy resources acquisition” to a “holistic” energy policy, encompassing diversification of energy sources, technological development, making the energy industry competitive and establishing international energy relations.

The biggest factor impacting China’s energy policy is the use of maritime transport. One of the world’s busiest shipping choke points, the Strait of Malacca, is used by a significant amount of China’s oil and LNG imports. It has long concerned Chinese strategists, who have also dubbed it the “Malacca Dilemma.” However, if this critical seaway is closed during a geopolitical crisis or war, it could clearly affect not only the Chinese economy but also the country’s security.

Beijing has long been trying to reduce the impact of these vulnerabilities by diversifying energy supply routes and energy transport. Other corridors are also under consideration, such as the Sunda Strait and Lombok Strait, but China has been working on land-based energy corridors that bypass the vulnerable sea straits. Overland transport has become an important component of China’s strategy of strategic resilience.

Pipeline diplomacy has thus emerged as an integral part of China’s contemporary energy policy. The country’s energy import options have been greatly increased by the extensive oil and natural gas pipelines linking it to Russia, Central Asia and Myanmar. China–Russia energy cooperation has significantly improved, with large-scale pipeline projects that enhance bilateral economic cooperation and decrease reliance on marine imports. Similarly, energy partnerships with Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and other Central Asian countries, have given rise to an important Eurasian energy network that has improved the region’s connectivity and interdependency.

Myanmar is one of the most strategic countries in this network. The China-Myanmar oil and gas pipelines enable energy supply transport from the Middle East and Africa to the southwestern provinces of China without going through the Strait of Malacca. These pipelines do not fully remove the need for imports by sea, but they provide a strategic buffer to lessen reliance on a single route and improve China’s ability to mitigate risks. This is a good illustration of how the energy business model continues to evolve as an instrument of economic and geopolitical ends.

However, the Chinese energy policy doesn’t end there. Perhaps the biggest success story of the nation has been in global leadership of the transition to renewable energy. In the last ten years, China has become the world’s largest manufacturer of solar, wind, lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles. Chinese businesses have dominated global clean energy value chains through massive investment, innovation, industrial policies and economies of scale.

The green transition has huge geopolitical implications. The technological advancement of renewable energy is improving China’s industrial competitiveness while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. As countries worldwide speed up their transition to a decarbonised future, demand for RE equipment, battery technologies and electric mobility solutions is increasing. China’s role in these industries will benefit its economy and increase its presence in the new green supply chain in the global arena.

Beijing’s move also reflects its recognition of the interdependence of energy and environment as complementary objectives. An increase in renewable energy helps achieve climate targets and promote energy security in the country. By diversifying away from imported hydrocarbons, China is looking to reduce its energy dependence and improve energy efficiency, while investing in advanced energy technologies.

The energy sector has therefore become a key component of China’s regional connectivity plan. Energy cooperation is increasingly part of larger economic and geopolitical processes, such as those of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the China–Indochina Peninsula Economic Corridor. As electricity transmission across borders, pipelines, investment in renewables and power-grid modernization change energy from a national to a regional issue, it is becoming a catalyst for regional integration.

Belt and Road Initiative is a good example of the multidimensional approach. Energy infrastructure is an important part of transport infrastructure, and it is not always the subject of public attention, as with ports, railways and highways. Chinese investments in power plants, electricity networks, transmission lines, hydropower installations, solar parks and wind power plants have brought energy to Asia, Africa and parts of Europe. The projects will aid the development of the host countries and enhance the overall economic ties between China and the host countries.

Energy diplomacy has also spread to Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and Russia. The concept of energy cooperation in Southeast Asia is increasingly going hand in hand with the process of economic integration, infrastructure connectivity and industrial cooperation in the region. Central Asia continues to be an essential route for natural gas supplies to Europe, and an important corridor between East Asia and Europe. Russia, especially after changes in energy markets, has become a major strategic energy partner. As for China’s growing involvement in Middle Eastern energy supply, it remains a vital source of stable hydrocarbon supplies and presents new prospects for cooperation in renewable energy and digital infrastructure.

This is a developing system of energy dependency, an important shift in regional geopolitics. Energy is no longer just traded; it is also influencing diplomatic alliances, investment patterns, technology transfers and strategic confidence in countries. When countries share energy infrastructure, they also share other economic and political ties.

In the foreseeable future, the emergence of digitisation is expected to be the key to taking Asian connectivity to the next level. Already, the use of artificial intelligence, big data analytics, cloud computing, and smart grid technologies is transforming how we manage our energy resources. China’s significant funding in AI will increasingly help optimize electricity generation, balance renewable energy integration, predict demand, optimize electricity grid efficiency, and boost energy security.

One of the most ambitious expressions of this vision is the idea of the Global Energy Interconnection. The initiative calls for smart electricity networks of interconnections that can transmit renewable electricity via advanced transmission technology across national borders. While there are major technical, economic and political hurdles to overcome, this initiative is part of China’s broader vision to tie energy, digital technology and regional connectivity together. If that’s the case, AI would play an absolutely vital role in operating more complex cross-border electricity networks and balancing the variable generation of renewable energy sources.

However, China’s growing energy consumption also poses significant challenges. International discussions about China’s infrastructure investments remain influenced by worries about debt sustainability, environmental effects, governance level, reliance on technology, and geopolitical leverage. Amid strategic competition between major powers, a closer look is being taken at cross-border energy projects. The challenge for many Asian countries is to make the most of the developmental aspects of Chinese energy cooperation without losing strategic autonomy or relying solely on China for energy imports.

In conclusion, China’s energy strategy is transforming the Asian geopolitical landscape by seamlessly combining energy security, technological dominance, regional connectivity, and economic diplomacy into a unified strategic approach. Beijing has turned energy into one of its main tools for foreign policy, from pipelines across Eurasia to renewable energy as a large market leader, to regional electricity networks and smart grids powered by artificial intelligence.

The twenty-first century will be characterised not just by a competition over military strength or trade, but also a competition over energy technologies, energy supply chains and energy connectivity. China’s ongoing transformation of its energy policy shows that the power dynamics of tomorrow are more about clean energy innovation, digital infrastructure and regional integration than energy itself. In this evolving geography, energy policy is more than just about fuel supply: it’s about a new geopolitical architecture of infrastructure, technology, sustainability and connectivity across Asia.
