Inflation And Spending Policies: Elon Musk’s Diagnosis And Turkey’s Realities – OpEd

In a recent comment on economics, Elon Musk stated that the key to reducing inflation is cutting government spending. This view aligns with one of the fundamental principles of economics: “demand management.” Government spending can increase overall demand in the market, thereby fueling inflation. However, implementing this approach in countries like Turkey appears challenging due to economic and political constraints.

Since taking office as the Turkish Minister of Treasury and Finance, has emphasized tight monetary policies and fiscal discipline to combat inflation. Yet, in practice, rather than reducing administrative expenses, fiscal balance is being pursued by limiting increases in pensions and social benefits. This approach relies on what is often called the “core voter” base—loyal constituents who are less likely to protest even when support is reduced.

“No Compromise on Prestige” Approach

While it is evident that reducing public spending is essential in Turkey, the persistence of luxury expenditures in public administration has drawn widespread public criticism. The slogan “no compromise on prestige” is embodied in high-cost projects, opulent public buildings, and official vehicles. This erodes trust in austerity measures, especially during times when citizens are facing significant economic hardships.

Although reducing government spending is a necessity, placing the burden on pensioners and fixed-income groups raises serious concerns about social justice. The modest increases in pensions leave these groups vulnerable to rising living costs. Given their economic fragility, such policies are questionable not only economically but also ethically.

What Needs to Be Done?

Reducing government spending is undoubtedly a crucial step in fighting inflation, but it must be done fairly, starting with luxury expenditures. Cuts in administrative expenses should not affect essential payments like pensions. Moreover, efficient use of public resources, elimination of waste, and the adoption of transparent fiscal policies are critical.

Elon Musk’s diagnosis is equally relevant for Turkey. However, implementing this solution requires not only economic measures but also strong political will. Acting with fairness and transparency, without increasing the burden on citizens, will help control inflation while restoring public trust in the government.
