Dagestan: Muslim Religious Leader Killed In Blast

By

A Muslim religious leader was killed in an explosion that occurred in the town of Buinaksk in the central part of Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee’s local department told RIA Novosti.

“According to preliminary data, about 06:00 a.m. Moscow Time [0200 GMT] an explosion at the intersection of Shamilya and Chkalova streets killed the imam of Buinaksk’s central mosque and his guard,” the spokesman said.

“Imam Gitinomagomed Abdulgapurov and his guard Magomedrasul Magomedov died on the site,” he said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

Russia has been battling a low-level Islamist insurgency in the region. Volatile Dagestan, which borders Chechnya, has seen around half of all militant attacks in Russia in the past two years.
