EU Parliament: Liberals Call For Sanctions Against Syria

By

The Liberals group in the European Parliament has called on the European members of the UN Security Council to table a resolution including sanctions against the Syrian leadership.

The proposed resolution calls on the international community to severely condemn the killings, freezes the assets of the Assad (family), starts investigations to bring the rulers to the international court and stops recognizing President Bashar Assad and his family as representatives of the Syrian people.

The leader of the Liberals, Guy Verhofstadt, in a statement said, if no consensus can be reached in the UN Security Council, the European Union should come forward with these actions in any case.

“Assad should know before he continues with new crimes that the international community will hold him accountable for every Syrian life he takes. This message should be crystal clear before a next “Bloody Friday” in the cities of Syria,” said Verhofstadt, an ex-Prime Minister of Belgium.

Noting that the Syrian army entered the city of Deraa yesterday, Verhofstadt said he expected an even bigger crackdown of the demonstrations.

“This is totally unacceptable. The time of statements is over, now it is time for action, ” he added.

The Liberals are the third-largest political group in the European Parliament.
