Abduction Of Peace Committee Members: FAK’s Legacy Of Brutality – OpEd
Recently, five members of the Peace Committee in Takht Khail, Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were abducted by terrorist groups Fitnah-al-khwarij (FAK). Following this kidnapping, social media has been awash by FAK to instill fear that members of the peace committee will be targeted everywhere. This rhetoric only aims to silence all those voices who stand for order and stability in society.
In its most basic form, the kidnapping of these five citizens is a warning by FAK to shut down every opinion in Pakistan that promotes peace and stability in the area. The Peace Committee is a group of local volunteers and leaders who strive to seal the gaps, secure civilians, and mediate during conflict. All this is essential towards sustaining peace and creating cooperation where militancy and violence are in force. The assault by FAK is a direct threat to these efforts, as it shows the bitter root of this group towards any attempt to restore harmony and peace in the nation.
The actions of FAK are not only deplorable but also an indication of their overall plans to sabotage the development that the local communities are striving to attain. FAK aims at establishing an aura of terror, suspicion, and revenge by attacking peace committees. The kidnapping in Takht Khail is not the only instance in which their tactics of terror and coercion are being utilized to ruin the peace in conflict regions. Their brutality is a calculated move to cause havoc and bring communities back to fear and enmity.
The khwarij have demonstrated a deep sense of disrespect to humanity and the fundamental values of Islam. In its actual sense, Islam preaches the concept of peace, justice, and the protection of innocent life. However, Khwarij use religious rhetoric to cover up their violent acts as well as bury their own personal and political interests. Their deeds are a sharp contrast to the actual teachings of Islam, which state the importance of human life and the search for peace. Their hypocrisy in their so-called cause comes into light when we consider the gruesome atrocities they cause to innocent civilians.
The violent history of FAK in Pakistan is self-explanatory. This group has also committed hundreds of acts of senseless violence with no single justifiable reason or rationale as to why they do it, such as indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians. It has been estimated that over the years, approximately 94, 000 innocents have died at the hands of FAK. This terrible human life cost is also enriched with their attacks on the important infrastructure, including the communication towers, schools, hospitals, and those working in government, which not only disturbs the lives of people but also the very society itself. Their violence proves that they have no regard for human life and civil order.
The fact that FAK uses brutality in its operations is even more concerning. Their trademarks have become extortion, ransom, random killings, and suicide bombings. These strategies are not only aimed at instilling fear in the populace but also at destabilizing Pakistan. Their attacks on the civilians, coupled with the fact that they use fear as a form of weapon against civilians, hamper the process of restoring peace in the region.
FAK’s cruelty knows no bounds. This can be demonstrated by the fact that they specifically targeted schools and hospitals, the institutions that are meant to take care of and heal, which they regarded with utter contempt as concerns the welfare of society is concerned. Towers of communication, essential in connectivity and communications, are brought down in their terrorist mission. The activity of government servants, people who strive to make the state stable, is also spoiled by the violence of FAK. This rampant destruction with no explanation provides a clear picture of what they are doing: chaos, violence, and destroying the structures of society.
What makes the matter even more aggravating is the increasing social media presence of FAK and other terrorists that use these platforms to disseminate their hate messages and cause even more violence, with negligible control from the platforms. Their capacity to propagate fear and control the minds of people through technology is one of the instruments they are still using. Tryingto intimidate members of the Peace Committee and propagating hate online is a mere way to roll the cycle of violence further and drive the region to the point of complete instability.
To sum up, the kidnapping of the members of the Peace Committee in Takht Khail constituted a powerful reminder of the pressure that Pakistan undergoes when combating the problem of extremism. It is a call to action to everyone who is a person who believes in peace, justice, and stability. The future of the region lies in the combined effort to face these threats straight on and collaborate in creating a safer place to live in, one that is more secure for future generations. This is, however, possible when we stick together in our peace agenda and avoid the destructive powers that will tend to tear us apart.
