By Ria Novosti
Mexican authorities issued a storm warning for five states along its Pacific coast prior to the arrival of the first hurricane of the 2011, the local civil defense service said.
Tropical Storm Adrian strengthened to a hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast on Wednesday heading northwest with sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) and waves up to 4 meters in height.
Residents and tourists along the coast dotted with popular resorts have been advised to have reserves of potable water and food.
Local rescue services have been put on high alert as the hurricane could bring heavy rains, floods and mud slides.
Last August, Hurricane Frank killed six people and destroyed 30 homes in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. According to Mexican authorities, losses from the hurricane exceeded $8.3 million.
