South Sudan Celebrates Independence

Southern Sudan started celebrating its independence from the north early Saturday morning. People in Juba, the capital of south Sudan, played drums, danced and sang the national anthem of the world’s newest country. Countries all around the world declared their recognition in the world’s 193rd nation.

A grand official ceremony was to be held at the Mausoleum of John Garang, a late leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement. The current leader, Salva Kiir Mayardit was to sign the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan and take the oath of office as the first president of south Sudan.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon and representative from the Arab League, the African Union and the European Union are to attend the ceremony. “The people of south Sudan have achieved their dream. The UN and the international community will continue to stand by South Sudan. I am very happy to be here,” UN chief Ban Ki-moon told reporters on arrival at the city’s UN airport on Friday.
