Worst Movies: Adam Sandler Leads Razzie Nominations

By

US actor Adam Sandler set a record for cinematic stinker nominations Saturday, February 26, as organizers of the Razzie awards unveiled their 32nd annual movie short lists of shame, Deccan Chronicle reported.

The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation nominees for worst films and performances, announced a day ahead of the Oscars, included no fewer than 11 for Sandler, more than double the previous record by Eddie Murphy in 2005.

Sandler amassed the 11 Razzie nods as actor, writer and/or producer of three critically-panned movies released by his Happy Madison Productions, “Jack & Jill,” “Bucky Larson” and “Just Go With It,” organizers said.

Cross-dressing comedy “Jack & Jill” leads the pack for Worst Picture with 12 nominations overall, including both worst actor and actress for Sandler and a third Razzie nod for Oscar winner Al Pacino, who plays himself in the movie.

Other Worst Picture nominees are “Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star,” “New Year’s Eve,” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” and “Breaking Wind,” a spoof on the “Twilight” movie series.

In a first for the Razzies, which were launched in 1980 as an antidote to Hollywood’s annual award shows, all five Worst Picture nominees are also in the running for Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Ensemble.

Other than Sandler, other high-profile Razzie nominees include Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, British comedian Russell Brand – tipped for Worst Actor for last year’s remake of the classic “Arthur” starring Dudley Moore.

The winners of the Razzies, nominees for which are chosen by 657 voters in 46 US states and 17 foreign countries, are usually announced on the Saturday before the Oscars.

But this year organizers changed the timetable, announcing the nominees on the eve of the Oscars, while the winners will be announced on Sunday, April 1 – April Fools’ Day.

Unlike the prestigious gold-plated Oscar statuettes handed out Sunday evening, the Razzie trophy is in the form of a raspberry, roughly the size of a golf ball, sprayed with gold paint and nestled on a reel of old Super 8 film.
