IAEA’s Amano Retracts Statements Accusing Syria Of Building Secret Nuclear Sites

By

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano backed down from statements in which he told the press that the Syrian Deir Al-Zour site, destroyed in by Israel in 2007, was developed as a secret nuclear site.

Amano said in a statement that the IAEA did not reach a conclusion that the site was developed to become a nuclear facility, contradicting statements which Amano gave to the Associated Press four years earlier that it was under development for atomic purposes.

Syria denied the West claims that it was eager to develop a nuclear program for military purposes.

Amano is currently working on a new report in regards to the Syrian nuclear program with the document to be presented to the next meeting for the IAEA Governing Council in Vienna next June.
